BIOGRAPHY

Matthew Brookoff is a New York-based choreographer, dancer and ballet teacher. He has directed the Brookoff Dance Repertory Company since 1994, creating a wide and varied repertory. He has received commissions from the Staten Island Ballet and Performance Mix NYC. Deborah Jowitt in The Village Voice called him “an accomplished dance-maker with intelligence and a sharp wit” while Elizabeth Zimmer in a Voice Choice item declared his work “a secret pleasure of the ballet crowd . . .whose choreography to Cole Porter has transfixed critics through the years.” Excerpts from Let’s Step Out, a Cole Porter dance suite, were broadcast on Metro Arts 13 Television. In addition to choreographing Brookoff has also written about dance in Ballet Review and Dance Magazine. He holds a BA in Dance from SUNY Purchase, an MA in Performance Studies from New York University, and an MFA in Choreography from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro where he worked as a lecturer upon graduation. He co-edited the dance reader, Intersections: Dance, Place and Identity and helped create the corresponding on line Dance Appreciation course. Before turning his attentions to choreography, Brookoff danced in the companies of Mark DeGarmo, Lynn Shapiro, Eva Dean and Rachel Thorne Germond.
