Contemporary Floorwork

BIOGRAPHY

Undercurrent is a Seattle-based dance project directed by Hilary Grumman and nurturing floorwork technique, biomechanically sustainable movement practices, experiential design, immersive performance, and care-centered community building.
Drawing on training with international practitioners and 11 years of personal floorwork research, Hilary has guided Undercurrent classes since 2017. After earning her BFA from CalArts, she pursued floorwork training with Piso Móvil, Flying Low, Psico-Físico, RUBBERBAND, Jorge Crecis, Ihsan Rustem, Adam Barruch, Moving Air, Duela-Cemento, A Surprised Body, CONTINUUM, and Austrian Parkour. Weaving these methods into her own investigations, she has cultivated a fluid, injury-preventative approach to getting low. Hilary has brought Undercurrent to the University of Washington, Cornish College of the Arts, SFD+I, Fremont Abbey, Velocity Dance Center, Spectrum Dance Theater, and Bodies of Empowerment SF, as well as hosted workshops with Nicole von Arx, Ground Grooves, Lavinia Vago, Harald Stojan, Elia Mrak, et al. Choreographic commissions include new works for Emmy Award-winning Sessions in Place, The Round, Ode at Mini Mart City Park, Kaylee Elizabeth, CO—, Starbucks, and more.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Undercurrent offers a deep dive into the vigor, mechanics, and efficiency of floorwork technique. In this intermediate class, participants will be guided through a playful stream of sequences, each using the body's architecture to make progressively challenging movement smooth, strategic, strengthening, and sustainable. As the flow gathers momentum, these foundations will grow into more complex patterns, inversions, tricks, and phrase work.
