Ashtanga Yoga

BIOGRAPHY

Christopher Hildebrandt studied with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the guru of Ashtanga Yoga, travelling yearly to Mysore, India from 1997 to 2008. He has also studied extensively with the guru's son, Manju Jois, and his grandson, R. Sharath. He has taught Ashtanga Yoga at the Jivamukti Yoga Center and the Ashtanga Yoga Shala of New York among others. He has given Ashtanga Yoga workshops at the Ashtanga Yoga Sadhana, the Omega Institute, Tapovana, and Yoga Yama. In addition to leading students through the classical sequences of postures in Ashtanga Yoga, he continues to train teachers and to teach assisting, Sanskrit, and yoga philosophy.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Ashtanga Yoga offers a classical sequence of postures strung together like beads with movement on the breath. The method is designed to lead the student through a gradual process from sun salutations through standing postures, to forward bends, twists, back bends, and inversions. The primary series is meant for physical therapy, while the intermediate series focuses on cleansing the nervous system, and the advanced series cultivates stability in the practitioner. Linking breath and movement is emphasized throughout. Sunday through Thursday each student is taught individually, one-on-one, slowly as much as the student can do and can remember. On Friday at 8:30am, there is a led class for all students to practice simultaneously, comprising the whole primary series.
