CLASS DESCRIPTION

A Jack Cole Jazz Technique class explores the foundational principles of Jack Cole’s rigorous and nuanced technique and idiom. The class is structured as a true technique progression, beginning with a dynamic warm up that drops the dancer into their humanity, breath, and strength from the inside, stretching and charging the body for the work ahead. From there the class moves into various floor and center progressions that challenge the body to release tension and approach technical work through expansion, functionality, and deep mindfulness. The class culminates in across the floor exercises that explore the application of this work, as well as the various world and vernacular movement styles and polyrhythms that informed Cole's choreography. As these principles are based in non-eurocentric dance forms, the dancer will be challenged to strip away their habitual approach to technical patterns, and widen their capacity for new ways of moving and strengthening the body through humanity, freedom, and sensation.
